What You'll Do

The term ‘Bunjin’ refers to cultured individuals of the late Edo period who indulged in poetry, literature, calligraphy, painting, and other arts in an elegant and refined manner.

On the first day of this tour, you will immerse yourself in the sophisticated and elegant world that the Bunjin experienced by visiting Jogenji, a Soto Zen temple established in the 4th year of Enkyo (1748). Here, you will witness the art of tea ceremony performed by the successor of the renowned Sencha school called “Baisaryu”, as well as experience the care of bonsai by a local bonsai artist. This will deepen your understanding of the refined and graceful world in which the Bunjin lived and enhance your appreciation of enduring Japanese culture.

On the second day, you will visit a bonsai garden called Aichien owned by a bonsai artist near Nagoya. This visit will provide you with a deeper insight into the world of bonsai, where you will learn about the charm and enjoyment of bonsai, techniques for evaluating them, and how to care for these intricate plants.

On the third day, you will explore Tokoname, the largest pottery production area in Japan. Optionally, you will have the chance to visit a workshop specializing in Tokoname-yaki, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan known for producing bonsai pots. This visit will enable you to engage with ceramic artists, and if desired, purchase high-quality pots for your use.
